Zoids -Bonds of Steel- (ZOIDS -鋼の絆-) was a browser-based smartphone game released by social networking service GREE. It was launched on the 28th of September 2012 and shut down almost two years later, on the 1st of September 2014. The game functioned mainly through PHP and JavaScript, with no audio and very few video files, allowing it to run on almost any web browser. Bonds of Steel featured a unique setting, storyline and characters, and contained hundreds of "cards" of Zoids, pilots and equipment, most of which used brand-new artwork. Gameplay mostly consisted of collecting these cards as rewards or from "gachas", using them to form a team, and clicking through automated battles against quest bosses or other players. The game was free to play, but players could spend real-world money to purchase gacha tickets and recovery items.
